Evelyn “Eva” Vanderbilt is a proud young woman from a fallen aristocratic family. After her parents die, she becomes responsible for her younger sister, Maggie. Eva has a painful leg injury after a car accident and walks with a cane. Many people pity her, mock her, or see her as weak, but Eva is stronger than they think. She is loyal, brave, and ready to sacrifice her own happiness to protect her family.

The story begins at a luxurious wedding on the grounds of the powerful Montclair estate. Maggie is supposed to marry Damian Montclair, a rich, cold, and dangerous man who wants access to valuable resources on Vanderbilt land.
